Typhoon in the Philippines Results More than 1.4 Million People Evacuated, 140 People Deaths

SAP News, Philippines : Relative to the people of the Republic of the Philippines who suffered from the winds of Typhoon Kalmaegi and caused severe flooding, destruction and resulted in tragic deaths. Pope Leo XIV expressed his sense of solidarity with the Filipino people in prayer.

Typhoon Fung-wong, known locally as Uwan, devastated parts of the Philippines on November 6, causing destruction and leaving thousands of families homeless.
According to Philippine authorities and international agencies, at least two people were killed (one in Catanduanes province and the other in Eastern Samar) during the passage of the phenomenon, which brought strong winds and torrential rains.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that the country faced severe flooding, landslides, and damage to essential infrastructure.
Local authorities estimated that more than 1.4 million people had been preemptively evacuated, approximately 482,000 were displaced and 318,000 were still sheltering in evacuation centers as of Monday morning (10).
The passage of Fung-wong, classified as a super typhoon, disrupted sea and air transport, downed power lines and damaged hundreds of homes. The Philippine government maintained maximum alert in several regions, while rescue and humanitarian assistance teams worked to help victims and restore basic services.
AFP news agency reported on Thursday (06/11/2025) that the National Office of Civil Defense of the Philippines has confirmed Typhoon Kalmaegi occurred and killed 140 people, 127 are missing after severe flooding in the central Philippines this week.
The typhoon is the deadliest in the world by 2025, according to the EM-DAT disaster database.
On Thursday, President Ferdinand Marcos declared a “national calamity”, authorizing the government to disburse funds for emergency support.
In connection with this incident, the Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (RDTL) expresses its deep solidarity and condolences to the Government and People of the Republic of the Philippines for suffering from Typhoon Kalmaegi and causing severe flooding, destruction and tragic deaths.
This sense of solidarity was expressed by the Prime Minister (PM), Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão in the Plenary of the National Parliament (PN), during the debate on the Draft Law (PPL) no.23/VI (3a) on the General State Budget (OJE) for the fiscal year 2026 in general, in the afternoon. “Some people have heard, there is a big earthquake in the Philippines, many people died, floods destroyed houses with a great possibility that in the coming days there may be a tsunami. Therefore, on behalf of the people of Timor-Leste, in this House I want to present a feeling of solidarity to the people of the Philippines. The Government is also considering deciding through an extraordinary Cabinet Meeting (CM) will consider sending an engineering company and a sanitary company from the FALINTIL Timor-Leste Defense Force (F-FDTL) to the Philippines to participate in emergency support.
The Head of Government considers Timor-Leste as a new member of ASEAN wants to show by using the new member country’s strength for humanitarian missions and assistance to victims of natural disasters.

In a letter sent to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão affirmed that Timor-Leste “is deeply saddened by the scale of this tragedy and the suffering that many families face until they lose their loved ones, homes and livelihoods”
Timor-Leste remains in solidarity with the Filipino people during this time of mourning and recovery, reaffirming the “friendship and regional cooperation” that unites the two countries and great admiration for the Filipino people.
