SAPNewsTL, Beijing : Timor-Leste has participated in the Global Partnership for Poverty Alleviation and Development (GPPAD) forum, joining 59 other nations and international organizations to address global strategies and cooperation for poverty reduction and sustainable development.

Timor-Leste was represented by the Vice Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister of Social Affairs, and Minister of Rural Development and Community Housing, Mariano Assanami Sabino. During the forum, he addressed key issues including monitoring, development assistance, food security, and strategies for sustainable development.

Mariano Assanami extended his gratitude to the government of the People’s Republic of China and the International Poverty Reduction Center in China for organizing this significant forum. The theme, “The Global Partnership for Poverty Alleviation and Development (GPPAD),” reflects the urgent need to strengthen solidarity and cooperation among nations to address global challenges.

“Poverty is not just an economic problem; it is also a matter of human dignity, social stability, and sustainable development. Therefore, the effort to reduce poverty must become a shared responsibility of the international community,” said Vice Prime Minister Assanami in Beijing on May 28, 2026.

As a developing nation and a new member of ASEAN, the Government of Timor-Leste considers food security a fundamental pillar for social stability, the dignity of its people, and national economic growth.

“Timor-Leste continues to prioritize rural development, agricultural modernization, job creation for the youth, the improvement of community housing, and human resource development,” Assanami emphasized.
He further highlighted the strategic role of the fisheries sector in combating poverty, promoting social inclusion, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening food security at both local and national levels.

During the international forum, the Vice Prime Minister also recognized China’s success in poverty alleviation. China’s achievement in lifting nearly 800 million people out of extreme poverty represents a historic success, demonstrating that poverty can be reduced through strong leadership, consistent policies, and long-term strategic planning.

Assanami also expressed appreciation for the continuous support China has provided to Timor-Leste since its struggle for independence and throughout its national development process, including support for infrastructure, agriculture, education, health, and institutional capacity building.
Regarding the establishment of the Global Partnership for Poverty Alleviation and Development (GPPAD), Timor-Leste welcomes the initiative as an important platform for international cooperation, knowledge sharing, and strengthening the capacity of nations to respond to development challenges.

Timor-Leste reaffirmed its readiness to actively participate in the activities and programs to be developed through this global partnership, and to continue working with international partners to promote inclusive and sustainable development.

The 2026 Global Forum on Development and Poverty Reduction concluded with a call to the international community to strengthen solidarity, partnerships, and practical cooperation to build a future that is inclusive, prosperous, and free from poverty for people around the world.
