NTT Earthquake Disaster: 47 Killed, 101 Injured, 5,000+ Evacuated After Magnitude 7.7 Quake Strikes Nagekeo

SAPNewsTL, Indonesia: An earthquake struck on August 15, 2026, with a magnitude of 7.7 in Mbay, Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia, resulting in 47 people losing their lives, 101 people injured, and more than 5,000 people evacuated to safe locations.
According to a report accessed by SAPNews via Metro TV, the earthquake triggered an early tsunami alert for the NTT area, including North Manggarai, North Ngada, North Ende, North Sikka, and the coastal zones of Flores.
An early alert was also issued for residents in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), particularly Bima and Dompu; and in South Sulawesi, including Jeneponto, Bantaeng, Selayar, Bone, Wajo, East Luwu, North Luwu, and Palopo, as well as Southeast Sulawesi.
The force of the earthquake caused damage to various infrastructure, private homes, and buildings. The most severe damage occurred at Lorens Say Port, Maumere, Sikka Regency.
As the ground shook, victims cried out to God and fled to save their lives amid the trauma.
A video accessed by SAPNews from Clara Tfuakani’s Facebook account showed some community members trapped under reinforced concrete, while others ran to save themselves as the ground shook violently and buildings collapsed.
According to updated data from Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the M7.7 earthquake in NTT, particularly Nagekeo, has resulted in 47 people dead, 101 injured, and more than 5,000 evacuated to safe locations.
