Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim Saddened by the Passing of Former President Lu Olo

SAPNewsTL, Malaysia : Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed deep sorrow upon hearing the news of the passing of former President of Timor-Leste, Francisco Guterres “Lu Olo”. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and to the people of Timor-Leste.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of former President of Timor-Leste, Francisco Guterres. On behalf of Malaysia, I extend my sincere condolences to his family and to the people of Timor-Leste,” Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim wrote on his official page on 22 June 2026.
President Guterres belonged to the generation that fought in the resistance and ultimately secured Timor-Leste’s independence.
“He spent many years in the resistance movement, where he became known as Lu Olo, and later served his country as President of the National Parliament and as Head of State. Throughout his life, he remained dedicated to the freedom of his people and to the building of a democratic nation,” he emphasized.
The people of Malaysia share in the grief of the Timorese people over his passing. He will continue to be remembered in Malaysia with great respect and affection.
At present, the body of Francisco Guterres “Lu Olo” remains at the mortuary of Prince Court Hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Communication is ongoing between the family and the Government regarding arrangements to repatriate his remains to Timor-Leste via Dili.
The passing of Francisco Guterres “Lu Olo” represents a profound loss for his extended family, for the FRETILIN party, for his comrades in the struggle, and for all those who shared the dream of building a free, democratic, and sovereign Timor-Leste.
The family has called upon the people of Timor-Leste to unite in prayer and pay tribute to his memory, legacy, and lifelong dedication to the Timorese people.
